Welcome to Marist's Cyber Security Scavenger Hunt

About

This is a style of Capture The Flag (CTF) game. What is CTF?

"In computer security, Capture the Flag (CTF) is a computer security competition. CTF contests are usually designed to serve as an educational exercise to give participants experience in securing a machine, as well as conducting and reacting to the sort of attacks found in the real world. Reverse-engineering, network sniffing, protocol analysis, system administration, programming, and cryptanalysis are all skills which have been required by prior CTF contests at DEF CON. There are two main styles of capture the flag competitions: attack/defense and jeopardy."

We're introducing a third style: Scavenger Hunt.
You will be given a map with a start and finish and points in between. Each point is a challenge, but not all have to be solved in order to finish. A challenge may have more than one solution that may lead you to different points in the map. Whoever finishes first, WINS!

This is how it works

You know you solved a challenge when you find the pattern "loc{...}" where the dots is a GPS decimal coordinate.
When you go to the actual location of the GPS coordinate, look for the pattern "flag{...}" where the dots is a 16 digit number.
The flag will be written somewhere, but you'll have to look around (under the table, under couch pillows, anywhere) because we don't
want the janitor to steal our precious flags. Once you have found the flag, XOR the flag with the GPS coordinate and enter the answer to the
flag server to advance to the next challenge.

For example, if loc{41.7239,-73.942586} and flag{12345678901234}, then (41723973942586 ^ 1234567890123456) = 1204135457163258

GRAND PRIZE

??? and a medal of honarary hacker

Don't think you're good enough?

This short competition was made to be solved for Marist students. We understand there's no computer security minor so we don't expect a lot. JUST DON'T QUIT! You will feel like you're stuck and have no other option, but start from scratch and think like a hacker. The messages are hints to help you find the flag. With some research and creative thinking you'll figure it out. If you want to learn more or see example challenges, look up CTF writeups. You will find many how to's from a range of categories worth 100 to 600 points. The challenges from this scavenger hunt should be worth 100 points, no more.

If you want to learn how to hack, now is the time!
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.
Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
